Alassio, which is slightly over one thousand years old, boasts its roots in the legend of Adelasia, daughter of Emperor Otto I, that together with Aleramo, found shelter in the current territory of Alassio.
The first settlements date back to the 10th century, when some families settled on the hill known as "Castlé" Madonna delle Grazie, which still preserves the most ancient coat of arms of Alassio.
Afterwards, these families moved away from the hills and settled near the beach, thus creating the "Burgun Alaxii".
Il Muretto (the wall): located near the municipal building, it consists of tiles featuring autographs of many renowned figures in the cultural, sport and entertainment sectors, like Hemingway, Coppi, Bartali, and the national football team.
Church of Santa Croce: Romanesque, founded by the Benedictine monks from the island of Gallinara in the 11th century, it features additions that were built in the 15th and 16th century. From the lookout situated in the adjacent park, it is possible to enjoy the unmatchable view on Baia del sole.
Madonna della Guardia Sanctuary: it rises on mount Tirasso and was built in 1200, its current structure dates back to the 17th century, and it is dedicated to our sailors and coral fishermen. It is surrounded by a 18,000 square metre park.
Church of Saint Ambrose: built in the second half of 1400, of Romanesque style converted in Baroque style at the beginning of the 1700s. The Renaissance facade was built in 1896. Inside it features typical Genoa frescos dating back to the 16th and 17th century.
Julia Augusta street: built in the 8th century B.C. after Emperor Augustus conquered Liguria, from whom it takes its name. Located between the church of S.Croce and the beginning of the city of Albenga, it is 4-km long and ends with the monumental complex of Saint Martin. Some tracts are original and the ruins of some Roman constructions and monumental tombs dated the end of the 1st century A.C. can be seen.
